Guar GumMaster (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba)
GumMaster is a determinate, single-stem guar with 32–35 % galactomannan, uniform maturity in 90–110 days and pods held above the ground for combine harvest. It is the variety exported for gum-processing contracts in the Americas and for irrigated guar in China. Agronomy and seed standards are below.

Botanical identity and type
Botanical name: Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub., Fabaceae.
Origin / type: Pakistani determinate, single-stem selection bred for high gum and mechanical harvest.
Crop type: Annual legume for gum-grade seed production under irrigation or reliable rainfall.
Where KN17 branches and ripens over several weeks, GumMaster carries most pods on a single 70–90 cm stem and dries down evenly, which cuts harvest losses and lets growers combine directly. Seed size is uniform (30,000–34,000 seeds per kg), endosperm share is higher and galactomannan tests 32–35 %, giving processors 10–15 % more gum per tonne. It responds to one or two supplementary irrigations at flowering and pod fill with seed yields of 1.5–2.5 t/ha; on purely rainfed marginal land KN17 is usually the safer choice.
GumMaster is less suitable as a fodder crop because of its lower leaf mass. It is sensitive to waterlogging at any stage and to frost; sow when soil is above 20 °C and finish harvest before autumn rains. Pod shatter is low, and the erect habit reduces soil contamination of the seed, which matters for the food-grade gum market.
Gum-grade seed is traded separately from sowing seed and specified on gum content and moisture rather than germination; that trade is handled by the guar seed site. The HS code table lists the headings for guar seed and guar gum; the phytosanitary table lists what SENASA, MAPA and SENASICA require.

Agronomy at a glance
Figures are typical ranges under good management; local trials should confirm rates for a specific site. Use the sowing rate tables to convert kg/ha to per-acre, per-feddan or per-jerib rates.
| Parameter | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Sowing rate | 12–18 kg/ha in rows (typical) |
| Sowing depth | 2–4 cm |
| Row spacing | 45–60 cm rows, 8–12 cm within row |
| Days to harvest | 90–110 days, uniform dry-down |
| Harvests per season | 1 |
| Yield, seed | 1.5–2.5 t/ha with 1–2 irrigations (typical); 1.0–1.5 t/ha rainfed |
| Yield, green fodder | Not recommended for fodder |
| Gum (galactomannan) content | 32–35 % of seed; protein 30–32 % |
| Soil pH | 7.0–8.5 |
| Water need | 350–500 mm; irrigate at flowering and pod fill |
| Temperature | Optimum 25–35 °C; sow above 20 °C soil |
| Salinity tolerance | Moderate: threshold ECe ~5 dS/m |
| Seeds per kg | 30,000–34,000 |
Export seed standards
Standards below are those written on the ISTA-format test report issued with each export lot. See how purity and germination standards work and how to read the report.
| Parameter | Export standard | Method / note |
|---|---|---|
| Pure seed (purity) | 99.0 % min | ISTA purity analysis on a 4-component working sample |
| Germination | 85 % min | ISTA between-paper or sand test, 4 x 100 seeds, normal seedlings |
| Moisture | 10 % max | ISTA oven method (low-constant temperature, 103 °C, 17 h) |
| Inert matter | 1.0 % max | Chaff, soil, broken pieces smaller than half seed |
| Other crop seed | 0.5 % max | Seeds of any other cultivated species |
| Weed seed | 0.1 % max | By number and identity on the report |
| Gum content (on request) | 32 % min | Laboratory extraction on composite sample |
| Varietal purity | 98 % min | Field inspection of seed crop |
Where it is grown
Seed is multiplied on irrigated contract farms in Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts of Sindh and around Bahawalpur in Punjab, sown in June–July and combined in October. Seed crops are rogued for off-types before flowering.
Importing markets: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, United States, China, India. It is the preferred variety for contract gum production in Argentina, Brazil and the southern United States, and for irrigated guar in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, China.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose GumMaster over KN17?
For gum production under irrigation or reliable rainfall: it gives 10–15 % more gum per tonne, ripens uniformly for combining and produces cleaner seed. For rainfed marginal land or dual-purpose fodder, KN17 is more robust.
Can GumMaster be combine-harvested?
Yes. Its single-stem habit, pods held above 20 cm and even dry-down allow direct combining at 10–12 % seed moisture with standard cereal headers at reduced cylinder speed.
What gum yield per hectare is realistic?
At 2.0 t/ha seed and 33 % gum, about 650 kg/ha of galactomannan. Processors typically recover 85–90 % of that as splits.
How is gum-grade seed specified?
On gum content (30–35 %), moisture (10 % max), admixture (1 % max) and ash rather than germination. Sowing-grade lots carry the ISTA germination report in addition.
Which countries require an import permit for guar seed?
Argentina (SENASA authorisation), Brazil (MAPA import permit), Mexico (SENASICA permit) and China (GACC registration) all require pre-approval in addition to the phytosanitary certificate. See the phytosanitary requirements table for details.
